Picos de Europa - June 2005
The Picos de Europa is a limestone mountain range lying central to the northern coastal provinces of Spain. It is a unique area, being the largest single mass of mountain limestone on the continent and the only true maritime range that Europe possesses. In containing fabulous rock sculptures it is truly a Garden of Eden for any aspiring climber and ideal for a 10-day expedition in June, as the snowfields are minimal and weather generally settled. The team of 11 comprised predominantly Commando Helicopter Force and RNAS Yeovilton personnel with distinguished reinforcements in Dave Barrett and Guy Buckingham.

Adventura Aconcagua - 2005
After a very enjoyable trekking trip to Kilimanjaro - also lead by Eric Sneyd - in January 2004, I was hoping for more of the same but on a grander scale, as our team headed towards Gatwick and the first of 4 flights towards Mendoza, Argentina. Eric had put together a 12 strong team with a wide range of mountaineering experience. It included several people who had never been to altitude, so our target Aconcagua at 6962m the highest mountain outside of the Himalaya, was an ambitious one.

Cockney Wild Teton - September 2004
The Tetons lie in the central Rockies, Northwest Wyoming and extend for 40 miles, just to the West of the Continental Divide.  Grand Teton, at 13,770' above sea level, rises 7,000' from the valley floor and the range forms one of the most photographed sky lines in the whole of the USA.  The National Park is stunning, with forested slopes and barren peaks capped with ice and snow even in late Summer, a diverse array of wildlife, alpine lakes and swollen torrents which carve out spectacular gorges.   A big advantage for expeds is that even the most remote regions are never more than 9 miles from safety through the canyons.

Salathé Jamming - September 2004
The aim of Salathé Jamming was for RNRM Mountaineering Club members to undertake a period of multi-day rock climbing in the Yosemite National Park in California, and climb perhaps the ultimate rock climb in the world - The Salathé Wall.  However three days into the trip, 3 members of the expedition found themselves clearing up after a fatal accident on El Cap and the big wall climbing aim was soon given a back seat.  Here are a few of the team members' thoughts on the trip

British Services Makalu Expedition - March 2004
The target for the Joint Service quadrennial expedition in 2004 was the South East Ridge of Makalu (8463m).  This route was chosen on the walk out from Kanchenguna following the successful 2000 exped, and the task of leading the trip fell to Colin Scott, an RAF Squadron Leader and member of the Kanch team.  The climbing team, 14 strong with 16 reserves was chosen after a selection week in November 2001, leaving considerable time for preparation and planning.  As always that time passed very quickly leaving the usual ever-lengthening list of jobs to be completed before we left the UK for Nepal in March 2004.

Weekend Breaks from Abbey Wood - March 2004
With MOD Abbey Wood in Bristol neatly dodging most of the snow that fell on England during the early part of the year, John Corderoy and Andy Reynolds decided that it was time to find a better winter mountaineering venue!  In March, an early Thursday morning train to Birmingham, followed by a budget 2½ hr flight to Malaga might not seem like a move in the right direction, however -  read on!

Viva Climb Vegas - December 2003
The 11 ranks of the Outdoor Leadership Training Element Talybont touched down in the Mojave Desert to be greeted by a chill wind and just a hint of drizzle in the air, not really what we had in mind after venturing across to the western US to climb at the Mecca of Red Rocks and of course if one was forced...have the odd run ashore in down town Vega!

Costa Blanca - 2002

Me, here, alone, at seven o'clock in the morning, at Gatwick airport, going on an expedition with three Lieutenant Commanders, to Benidorm, with my reputation........

The four of us (Neil Hicking, Dave Barrett, Mick Cooke & myself) met at Gatwick airport early on Saturday morning to catch our flight to Alicante. The hire car company then had a small shock when Mick handed them a massive list detailing the existing damage to their so calledso-called 'mint' vehicle. Our desire for directions to the apartment was thwarted by the holiday staff but after an hour's drive up the autoroute and a circuitous trip around New Benidorm we arrived at our apartment, the 'Monte Carlo'. The afternoon was used to sort kit and buy in victuals.
